DR. Peter James Smith, Ed.D

Creative Director/Website Manager
Dr. Peter James Smith, Ed.D is the only person in the history of Saint Leo University to hold five different degrees, including his educational doctorate. He also earned a Master's Certificate in Special Education from Georgian Court University. Born in May 1971 in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, he became a "pier rat" on the Casino Pier when he was about 6 years old, and has been on the boardwalk ever since, and currently owns the Hiering Avenue Parking Lot and the Beach Umbrella Stands located on the beach in Seaside Heights. Dr. Smith is the youngest of six siblings all raised in Seaside Heights: David, Harry, Phil, Maryanne and Paul John. His brother Harry Smith was the Mayor of Seaside Heights for a short time in 2015, and has otherwise been a Councilman in Seaside Heights since 2012, often serving as the Council President. Dr. Smith's grandparents visited Seaside Heights since the 1920's, and relocated to Seaside Heights from Philadelphia in 1946. Dr. Smith is retired from The Borough of Seaside Heights, first serving as an SHPD police dispatcher, and later as the Director of Public Relations and Advertising and Publicity. Dr. Smith also worked as a teacher in the Hugh J. Boyd, Jr. Elementary School in Seaside Heights, and after that, he served on the Seaside Heights Board of Education for 20 years, from 2002 to 2022, serving as Board President for many of those years. In 2004, Dr. Smith won a prestigious award from the New York Independent International Film and Video Festival: Best Researched Documentary Short for Doorway To Hell: The Mysteries and Controversies Surrounding the Haunted Castle at Six Flags Great Adventure. Doorway To Hell is still a "thing' to this day, as it continually grows viral, even after many years on his youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@drpeterjamessmith, where Dr. Smith has posted hundreds of videos over the years. He is considered the authority of the Haunted Castle and the fire, often interviewed for articles relating to the deadly fire which killed six teenagers. Also in 2004, Dr. Smith launched a very popular website called popartpete which highlighted the history, color and personalities of Seaside Heights. The popartpete legend still continues today on the blog: popartpete@wordpress.com and is going to be the area on broadwaymeetsthebeach.com that provides Seaside Heights Information, History, Points of Interest, Where to eat, Where to stay, and many other aspects of, "The Town That Fun Built". Dr. Smith coined the phrase "The Town That Fun Built" when he oversaw the restoration of a 1960's-era film reel to modern format with his friend Joe Verderosa of Greenrose Media and President of the Seaside Heights Historical Society. Both Dr. Smith and Mr. Verderosa are founding trustees of the Seaside Heights Historical Society, which oversaw the restoration and the re-introduction of the Dr. Floyd Moreland 1910 Dentzel and Looff Carousel, which stands today between Carteret and Sampson Avenues on the Seaside Heights Boardwalk. Coincidentally, Dr. Smith's nephew Matt Smith is the general manager of the Carousel now. Dr. Smith and Joe Verderosa also filmed the notorious 9/12/2013 Seaside Heights Boardwalk fire and Dr. Smith also was the first to film the devastation of Seaside Heights in the wake of notorious Hurricane Sandy. Always the consumate actor, Dr. Smith has had parts in the "Purple Monkey" scene of the cult classic film Artie Lange's Beer League" (:55 in clip), Tomorrow is Today, One Life To Live and others. Although Broadway Meets The Beach creator and producer Joseph John Brunetti is one of Dr. Smith's best friends, Broadway Joe has yet to let Dr. Smith perform on stage! But Dr. Smith says, "But I won't quit until I'm a star on Broadway!"
